Seed Potatoes

Seed potatoes are not really seeds, but are small potatoes that have been especially grown for seed use by specialist growers to give you the best chance of a healthy crop. Try to ensure that you buy certified disease free seed potatoes, and avoid planting potatoes bought for kitchen use as these will give disappointing results.
When choosing your seed potato varieties - there are a number of thing you should consider.

  • When does the variety mature? - For most people who are new to growing, we'd say start with first or second earlies which will give a quicker crop.
  • Are they resistant to particular pests and diseases? - If you have blight in your area you will want a more blight resistant variety.
  • Are they suitable for container growing? - In smaller gardens, containers can give you super crops of fresh new potatoes.
  • How many of each do you need? We sell our seed potatoes by the count of 12 - so its easy to try different varieties!
