Growing in Raised beds

Many gardeners have found the advantages of raised beds. They are better drained, warm up quicker and are easier to improve with manure or garden compost, or to make into specialised beds for plants with special growing media requirements like alpines. They define the area in use and are easier to mark out and work on without walking on the soil and compacting it.

For the gardener they mean permanent paths which can perhaps be gravelled, making for better working conditions. For the older gardener (and many younger ones) the ground is not so far down!

They can be any convenient height and permanent beds for specialised plants are often raised to waist height to enable close viewing of small plants - ideal for the infirm or poorly sighted, especially with scented plants and herbs.
